This post is part of a series I’m writing from mid-June to mid-November 2024, on things that helped me rebuild my confidence, sense of self, and increased my delight in my life after massive difficulty in multiple areas. For full details and post links to all 110 things, go to this post here.
Tip #15 - eat something new (to you)
**fair warning this post contains a real lot of food pictures**
Hell yeah this tip is about food.
Hell yeah that title is also true.
When I was a kid we were pretty basic in what we ate. Made a mean spaghetti at our house and plenty leftover for the week. We would have roasts and then I’d have roast beef sandwiches without the bread for lunch during the week at school too. Love me a dino nugget. If you were cool I might’ve shared those nuggets with you. Buttered noodles and parm cheese was also a fav.
I am not a great cook, and there’s lots I haven’t tried to eat or to make.
In culinary ways I have a lot to learn still too, which is fine, it just is what it is.
It’s kind of exciting having so much to try as an adult. Yes, it very much is like that “I don’t know how I like my eggs” part of Runaway Bride. This whole process is, and we figure it out by figuring it out. Sometimes it’s overwhelming.
Often it’s really frustrating.
I’d let Richard Gere yell at me about eggs though that’s for sure…
So anyway, I didn’t have goat cheese until I was 34.
Loads of other things I hadn’t ever had before too. Lucky for me I found a couple friends who were kind of eager to help me experience new things, who were delighted to help me figure out what I liked, who knew places that had food worth trying, and who would help me explore this stuff when we’d hang out.
Everyone should have a friend like this, who pays attention to your preferences, who plans something new to try next time, who considers your previous likes and the stuff you don’t like, who knows your history and is a blast to hang with while you eat together.
Such good stuff.
It’s a quick tip, trying something new to you to eat, but it’s just focusing some intention on coloring in what else we can learn about ourselves.
Even if you’ve had loads of good food and tried cool things, if you’ve struggled with people pleasing or have lost yourself in relationships, this can also just be figuring out whether or not you actually like something or if you were saying you did,
Turns out I like brussel sprouts, artichoke hearts on pizza, spicier stuff than I thought, love balsamic, and am way more open to try things at least once.
It’s good practice in expressing opinions, in figuring out preferences, and all of that can be leveled up and out to larger things.
My babes it’s so small, trying new foods, but honestly when you’ve been in a place where food is difficult, feeling able to express your opinions honestly and openly and to be out of survival mode enough to even take the time and space to form a genuine opinion about what you taste…being able to decide this stuff, as simple as how you like your eggs, what kind of cheese you’ll bring home from the store, and not just reaching for the dino nuggies at the store….it’s a big fucking step towards personal liberation.
Love you - ttyl
